Letter to Myself.
Founder Letter - Theresa Rowsell
I wrote this letter to myself from the future as a motivational expression of my 10 year vision for MotherTree.
“Mother Tree is the legacy that I will leave this world and has been some of the most meaningful work of my life. It has been the conduit for changing the lives of so many people, creating the conditions for them to feel joy from their work, building a deep sense of self worth and accumulating net worth along the way. We've carved pathways for so many people to plan for their future and generate net worth all while cultivating an alternative way to do business that is regenerative and supports itself. We've raised more then $500M from generous, values aligned people who have donated their money, businesses and assets to Mother Tree to steward with a people centred focus.
I have a good life, mortgage free, no debt and I make good money that allows me to live a fulfilling life and support my family in a meaningful way. I model what it means to live well without taking access. I appreciate a comfortable life and I have the ability to be generous and support others in their efforts to make the world a better place in their own way. I have $1M of cash in my account, 2 modest properties that allow Amy and I to have a landing pad for ourselves and Stella but also share with our families while we travel. Robyn has her property on the water and condo in the City (and her kids still live in their house).
I'm proud that the people who work in our company are paid well, have access to programs that support them in designing their Big Beautiful life and that we help them in accumulating wealth for their families and that the communities that Mother Tree is part of are better for having us there. We have a culture of kindness, diversity and love, from the experiences we create for our employees, partners, customers and anyone who connects with Mother Tree.
We've built a brand and reputation that is known for taking care of people, doing the right thing, running excellent businesses and disrupting how business is done. From how we've redefined what it means to have health benefits, supporting access to loans for our employees, or the employee ownership model we've created, Mother Tree has been a catalyst for positive change. We've used a local focus to have a global impact.
Our business runs like a fine tuned machine, we circulate profits and it compounds on itself the more we give away, the more impact we have, the more our businesses continue to grow. We are often highlighted in business articles, interviews and repeatedly asked to speak about our business model.
Our balance sheets, P&L's and EBITA's are strong even though we don't overcharge and are transparent with things like fair wage and it has transformed the relationship between customers and small business. We've expanded our influences to other countries and our network of HNW individuals who have been inspired to join the movement continues to grow.
We've worked with McKenzie Scott, Melinda Gates and even Oprah but it's really been the countless unknown baby boomers, running great businesses that had no one to pass their money and assets to that have been the linchpin of our success. Our company is full of incredible humans, smart, humble and determined to see Mother Tree's success for generations to come.
Students from the top business schools in the world marvel at the opportunity to intern with us so they can get a taste of our company culture and model firsthand. Mother Tree is a regenerative economy business model that has now been replicated in several countries around the world, where our model spread wealth to the many over the few and has transformed the way business is done.
The vision for Mother Tree was seeded in a small coffee shop on Commercial Drive in Vancouver on April 19, 2024, with a chance encounter of two women sitting at a crossroads in life and sharing a desire to do something that would contribute to making the world a better place.”
